Last time, we began a two-part series dedicated to providing those new to the tech scene, as well as industry pros wanting to keep up with new trends, with a brief overview of some of the important tech terms they will need to know to keep up in the industry. If you missed it, you can find it here.
Today, we are going to conclude this two-part series with a few more key tech terms that will come in handy whilst navigating the world of tech and software.
Round Two
Social Media Terms
Engagement: Engagement is a term that refers to how much people interact with a social media platform. An example of this would be a video that goes viral on Facebook; this video would be said to have high levels of engagement.
Mention: A mention is essentially just what it sounds like. If someone refers back to another person on Twitter, then they have mentioned them. Example: @mention on Twitter, or +mention on Google+. On other platforms like Facebook, mentions are linked in a more natural appearing way by simply linking to a person or company’s name.
Microblogging: Microblogging is the process of posting frequent and often brief updates. Unlike traditional blogging that is usually hosted on a dedicated web page or site, microblogging is typically done via social media platforms like Facebook or Google+.
Growth Hacking Terms
Growth Hacking: Growth hacking is a term that refers to a particular marketing practice/strategy centered on engaging with users to the best effect. Success is typically measured in results rather than following a prescribed methodology.
Data Mining: Data mining, also sometimes referred to as data discovery, is the process of collecting and analyzing large amounts of data from various perspectives with the end goal of synthesizing it into useful information. This information might then be used to develop more effective marketing/business strategies, or from a business standpoint, it might be a valid tool for increasing revenue.
A/B Testing: This term refers to a process that allows developers, marketers, and other professionals to determine which version of an app or a web page will perform better.
Content Marketing: Content marketing is a strategy employed by marketing professionals and organizations. It is an approach that focuses on creating and distributing content that is valuable and relevant, with the goal of attracting potential clients or customers. The end goal, of course, is to encourage those potential consumers or clients to engage in profitable interactions.
Systems Terms
Cloud Computing: The cloud still mystifies many people, but the concept is relatively simple. The cloud simply refers to storing and accessing information via the internet. Data is managed at servers that are not located locally.
Caching: Caching (pronounced like “cashing”) is the process of storing data in a temporary storage area known as a cache. This allows for quicker access times and helps ease any strain (however minor) on networks and servers by limiting additional traffic.
Virtual Machine: A virtual machine (VM) is a software computer that imitates dedicated hardware. In other words, it is a self-contained environment that behaves as if it is a separate computer.
As you can surmise, the tech industry is full of unique terms and ideas. For those who are new to the tech world, these terms can be confusing. They can be confusing even to professionals at times since technology and the language surrounding it can change at lightning speed.
